In this paper, we re-examine the first decade of democratization after the Cold War and argue that the setting of unreasonable expectations will have a potentially deleterious effect on political participation and democratic consolidation.

In this paper, I provide an empirical test of one aspect of the arguments relating to the effect of reiterated elections on level of democracy.
